![]() Erich Eisner (1897–1956 also known as Erich Erck), who was given refuge in Bolivia, founded several performance organizations there, the most prominent of which - Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional - remains a vital institution to this day. Polish-born Josef Rosenstock (1895–1985), for example, who found refuge in Japan in 1936, relished the opportunity to introduce Western music in Tokyo he and other foreigners in Japan, including the pianist Leo Sirota (1885–1965) and the violinist Leonid Kreutzer (1884–1953), were interned in the 1940s as enemy aliens, but Rosenstock was revered in the postwar period for having helped to make Japan's first professional orchestra, established in 1926 and today named the NHK Symphony Orchestra, an internationally recognized institution. Depending on an individual's viewpoint and attitude, this was either a burden or a challenge. After Nazi Germany's invasion of Austria - the so-called Anschluss, in March 1938 - and then again after the Kristallnacht pogroms of 9–10 November of that year, the angle of Jewish dispersion from Central Europe necessarily widened significantly, eventually encompassing not only the United Kingdom, North America and Palestine but also China, Japan, most of Central and South America, Australia, New Zealand and even some portions of Africa.Įxiles from the highly saturated (and competitive) cultural centers of Europe who came to localities with little or no receptivity for European culture could consider themselves fortunate if they found opportunities to practice their profession, and when they did, they usually had to start from scratch. Increasingly however, those fleeing Europe had no choice of destination. A conductor such as the Hungarian-born George Szell (1897–1970 originally György Széll), for example, who had toured internationally and made his debut in the United States in 1930, had no trouble relocating to that country in 1939, though at first he had to support himself partly by teaching. The greater a musician's previous international exposure, the greater the chance that s/he had some choice about country of refuge. Palestine, too, attracted a number of musician exiles, particularly after the energetic organizer Karel Salmon (1897–1974 originally Karel Salomon) arrived in Jerusalem in 1933 and the violinist Bronislaw Huberman (1882–1947) founded the Palestine Symphony Orchestra in Tel Aviv in 1936. Those who suspected that National Socialism might threaten the entire European continent set their sights further afield, above all on England and the United States. ![]() The rest of Europe, particularly Switzerland, France, the Netherlands, Denmark and Scandinavia, also experienced an immediate influx of Jewish and progressive refugees. Despite the possibility that Austria and Germany might eventually unify, Vienna offered the greatest equivalence of professional possibility. In the initial wave of forced expulsion from Germany after the Machtübernahme of 1933, the choice of safe haven for many was Vienna. Most easily identifiable as agents of transformation were those figures who had already achieved some degree of public stature, but regular folk - workers and professionals living private lives in circumscribed spheres - likewise had a significant, if more subtle, collective cultural impact, as can be seen in changes to national cuisines and fashions, and in the more intangible areas of international awareness and tolerance of the Other. Artists, writers, scientists and intellectuals who established vital spheres of activity in their new homelands seminally affected the arts, sciences, humanities and even national sensibilities. No less transformative was the influx of exiles into the countries willing to give them refuge. Germany and Austria were transformed by the forced expatriation of Jews during the 1930s and 1940s. ![]() ![]() The Dispersion of Hitler's Exiles: European Musicians as Agents of Cultural Transformation The Dispersion of Hitler’s Exiles: European Musicians as Agents of Cultural Transformation

![]() In practice, however, NAT and CLZ presented the disadvantages of low water solubility, rapid metabolism, and high dosing frequency, thus limiting their therapeutic potential. Therefore, it has been hypothesized that the combination of NAT with CLZ might have a synergistic effect upon the treatment of FK. In addition, CLZ also has the capability to interfere with the transformation of Candida albicans from the spore form to the invasive hyphae ( Adams, 1990 Govender, 2015). In particular, clotrimazole (CLZ) kills the fungal cell by inhibiting the biosynthesis of triglycerides and phospholipids along with the activity of oxidase and peroxidase, making this a broad-spectrum antimycotic drug. Despite its worldwide use in the treatment of FK, a long treatment time is incurred when NAT is used alone and, hence, adjuvant therapy with other drugs is usually required. The antifungal mechanism of NAT is to damage the permeability of the cell membrane by binding with ergosterol and to disrupt the normal metabolism and growth of the fungus. Meanwhile, natamycin (NAT) is the only topical ophthalmic drug with powerful antifungal effects and few side effects that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ( Dietrich, 2010 Mimouni et al., 2014). The main fungal species, causing corneal fungal inflammation, are Fusarium, Aspergillus, and Candida, with Candida being one of the most important pathogenic fungi. Moreover, its relatively high prevalence makes it a very serious burden for health care systems around the tropical regions such as South India, Ghana, and China ( Roy et al., 2019). Taken together, the results suggest that this design may provide a promising drug delivery system and a new option for the treatment of FK.įungal keratitis (FK) is a major form of inflammation that is accompanied by vision loss and blindness ( Chodosh, 2011 Liu et al., 2013). Thus, good biosafety along with a significant anti-candidiasis effect are found in the nanoparticles (NPs). Furthermore, in vitro hemolysis, in vivo corneal irritation test, local allergenic test, and antifungal activity analyses are performed to evaluate the safety and efficiency of the formulations. The results show that the formulations had obvious core-shell structures, uniform particle distribution, and also can sustain the release of drugs over 36 h. The resulting formulations were characterized by a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and in vitro release test. Hence, coaxial electrospray (CO-ES) technology is used herein to prepare nano-systems with an average hydrodynamic particle size of 309-406 nm for the co-delivery of NAT and CLZ in chitosan (CTS) and poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA). Growing research has confirmed that clotrimazole (CLZ) plays a significant role in fungal growth inhibition. However, its inherent shortcomings, such as poor solubility, high dosing frequency, and long treatment cycle, need to be urgently addressed by designing a new delivery to widen its clinical utility. Natamycin (NAT) is the drug of choice for the treatment of fungal keratitis (FK). 4Shandong Engineering Research Center for Smart Materials and Regenerative Medicine, Weifang Medical University, Weifang, China.3Collaborative Innovation Center for Target Drug Delivery System, Weifang Medical University, Weifang, China.2Department of Pharmacy, Weifang Traditional Chinese Hospital, Weifang, China.1College of Pharmacy, Weifang Medical University, Weifang, China.Xiaoming Cui 1, Xiaoli Li 2, Zhilu Xu 1, Xiuwen Guan 1,3,4, Jinlong Ma 1,3,4, Dejun Ding 1,3,4* and Weifen Zhang 1,3,4* ![]() OutRun 2and OutRun 2006 received glowing reviews on home consoles, but the handheld port may have been overlooked in the rush of other titles released at the time. Bear in mind, though, that they’re getting quite rare and expensive to pick up these days. If you’re a fan of the series, Parodius Portable‘s pretty much unmissable – as are Konami’s other collections for the PSP, which focus on the Twinbee, Castlevania, and Salamander franchises. The collection also contains a bonus you won’t find anywhere else: a remastered version of the original MSX Parodius from 1988, which cleans up the 8-bit edition’s jerky scrolling. And while the games on here were ported to other consoles in the past, most of them were Japan-only releases, so Parodius Portable is a relatively affordable way of getting them all on one disc. Like the Gradius Collection before it, this release gathers together five of Konami’s ’80s and ’90s shooters, which serve as a kind of demented spin-off from the main Gradius series. He’s a bit like Thor, but without the mullet and grandiose vocabulary.Īs a venue for handheld versions of old arcade classics, the PSP was pretty much unmatched until the Nintendo Switch came along. Dashing through a range of 2D stages, Harry (or Gen as he’s known in Japan) specializes in bashing everyone and everything into oblivion. Like earlier entries, Hammerin’ Hero is simple stuff: you play a little guy with a big temper and an even bigger hammer. Hammerin’ HeroĪlthough it dates back to the ’80s, this action franchise has always been a bit obscure, perhaps because its design feels so distinctly Japanese. With over a 150 new stages and a level editor, though, this is arguably one of the most polished and complete versions of Lemmings made so far. The basic gameplay remains the same as always: guide those mindless critters from entrance to exit without letting too many of them die. The PSP version of Lemmings contains updated graphics and new levels to solve, while the ability to zoom in and out of the action makes the task of selecting icons and applying them to individual lemmings a simple enough task. ![]() Its bite-sized levels and fast-paced problem-solving remain as charming in handheld form as they ever were. It’s a relic from the Amiga era, but Lemmings feels right at home on the PSP. Relaxing and funny, they never fail to lift the spirits. If you’ve had a long day at work, the Loco Roco games are a great way to unwind. Loco Roco 2Īlthough it offers more of the same world-tilting, rolling action as its predecessor, Loco Roco 2offers a wealth of new abilities (including the ability to venture underwater), catchy tunes, and adorable moments of cartoon whimsy. Lead your army of creatures to victory through a mix of expertly timed button presses and canny strategic decisions – and prepare to have the infuriatingly catchy music trapped in your head for days. Released relatively late in the PSP’s life, Patapon 3 isn’t quite as well known as the previous entries, but it’s another delightfully odd rhythm-action game. Released solely in Japan, Gradius Gaiden‘s an overlooked classic all by itself – a superb mix of traditional shooting action, great 2D sprites and 3D graphics, and a firm-but fair difficulty curve. What makes the Gradius Collection a must-have, though, is its inclusion of Gradius Gaiden – Konami’s PlayStation-exclusive spin-off that appeared in 1997. Here you’ll find the first four arcade games, all emulated pretty much perfectly on the PSP’s pin-sharp screen – and we have to say, if you love space ship shooters, the Gradius games work on the handheld extremely well. Gradius CollectionĬollecting together five of Konami’s classic 2D shooters on one tiny disc, the Gradius Collection‘s fairly self-explanatory. Sadly, the commercial disappointment of this first outing nipped all that in the bud. At one stage, Capcom was planning to make an entire series of Mega Man remakes. The remake’s joined by the original NES version, plus the welcome addition of a level editor – meaning that Mega Man beat Mario Maker to the punch by about a decade. ![]() The 2D action is fast and smooth, and all the original Robot Masters are present and correct. In essence, Powered Up is a remake of the original Mega Man from 1987, but the completely reworked polygon graphics, cutscenes, and full voice-acting give this release its own look and feel. Although the lion’s share of Mega Man titles came out on Nintendo systems, the Blue Bomber also made a notable appearance on the PSP. ![]() ![]() The party returns to Midgards where Reisen shows them the Magitech Lab. The moment I was really sold on the demo was one such event - Jones and co. Damage to this is what can cause the really spectacular moments, and Jones and his team make a point to shoot for that imagery. In order to make the technology work, the team behind Crackdown has modelled the inner structure of every building - meaning that if you scatter-shot machine gun fire at the walls, eventually you're going to expose thick steel beams and other features of the superstructure underneath. The group are in a four-player co-op session and simply begin to level city blocks with rocket launchers that, Jones assures, are deliberately over-powered for the demo - a simple rocket launcher alone won't be enough to topple most buildings in the final game. ![]() I fully anticipate many comedy destruction cocks to be shot into the walls of Crackdown 3's city come launch day.įrom this point on, Jones and the other members of his team ramp up the level of destruction on display. ![]() And, yes - if you wanted that circle to instead be a square, or any other crude shape, you could certainly shoot it out of that same wall. That circular piece of wall that moments earlier didn't exist can be stood on, or picked up and thrown - and this is the basis for everything that comes, no matter how large the scale gets. This doesn't seem like much until one considers what's going on - the game has recognized that a piece has been separated from the rest of the wall and calculated its shape, size and mass on the fly - and then made it its own piece of geometry in the world. When the wall could no longer maintain the structure, the whole of the inside of the circle simply toppled out of the wall and to the floor. The first demonstration of the technology was deceptively simple - Dave Jones, the game's director and one of the creators of the original Grand Theft Auto, simply shot a circle in a piece of wall. So here's the deal - in this mode, Crackdown 3's city is 100% destructible, with every building you can see able to be reduced to rubble. It was my final appointment of a blistering day at Gamescom - but to say it woke me right back up would be something of an understatement. There's caveats to everything I'm about to write - in Crackdown, the destruction is only available in a specific multiplayer mode, and the game itself is in a recognizably early state, with textures missing in places and only one playable character model available - but as technical demonstations go, this was an impressive one, leaving me with eyebrows raised. Here, banks of servers miles away are used to assist Crackdown 3 as it calculates massive amounts of architectural destruction on the fly. I'm talking about Microsoft's impressive demonstration of what the Xbox One and Microsoft's much-touted cloud computing capabilities can do. ![]() The last time was probably when I first played the game that'd eventually become EVE Valkyrie on the Oculus Rift - but Microsoft has managed it with a Crackdown 3 demo that, to be honest, left me a little slack-jawed - even if the game itself doesn't yet seem too immediately exciting. It's been quite a while since something at a trade show has truly blindsided me. It's far beyond what's possible on any of the consoles, and even appears to outstrip what any one mega PC could manage." "As technology goes, Crackdown 3's is nuts.
